A report on Chinese companies’ global ambitions links rising AI investment with higher electricity demand. It says that could increase demand for energy storage, power equipment and energy management technology as renewable energy expands.

Why it matters

The report’s compilers, Deloitte, Yicai Research Institute and Chin@Moment, also say AI is being integrated more deeply into industry. China Daily reports that high-tech exports rose 39 per cent year on year to 3.26 trillion yuan in the first half of 2026, though that figure covers advanced manufacturing, green energy and digital technology, not AI alone. The useful signal is that AI’s infrastructure bill may create opportunities beyond chips and data centres. How much of that electricity growth should be met by building more generation, and how much by improving storage and energy management?
