Penang has set aside RM4.5 million in its 2027 budget to support technology startups, help small businesses go digital and expand AI use across the state’s economy, Malay Mail reports.

Why it matters

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the startup community supported by the initiative has generated 310 companies and about 1,720 jobs. He also said 675 graduates and working professionals had completed chip-design training, with 85 per cent finding employment. The budget announcement also points to AI learning programmes for rural schools through mobile initiatives. It is a practical mix of business support and skills-building, though the report does not break down how the RM4.5 million will be divided.

Discuss: Should Penang put more of this funding into helping businesses adopt AI now, or into training people for the jobs that adoption may create?
