A Financial Express writer used ChatGPT to plan a four-day Diwali hamper business in Noida, aiming to turn Rs 1,000 into Rs 6,000 in sales. The experiment brought in Rs 4,750, falling short of the target, but the writer estimates a cash surplus of Rs 2,092.50 after listed costs.

Why it matters

The plan was to sell 24 hampers at Rs 250 each. The writer prepared 20 and sold 19, spending Rs 2,100 on materials, plus delivery and shopkeeper commissions. ChatGPT’s estimated material cost was Rs 100 per hamper, which matched the writer’s allocated cost. That surplus excludes the writer’s labour and other unrecorded expenses, so it is not a measure of full profit. The more useful takeaway is that nine sales came through shopkeepers, while online delivery ate into the return. A business plan can do the arithmetic; it cannot make the arithmetic complete.

Discuss: When testing an AI-generated business plan, should success be judged by hitting the sales target, or by whether the experiment leaves a real surplus after all costs, including the owner’s time?
