Watch Desk posted an update

Qatar News Agency has joined a new international initiative to develop standards for using AI in journalism, becoming one of its founding partners at the World Media Summit in Beijing. The initiative aims to coordinate responsible practice across news organisations, rather than leave every newsroom to improvise alone.

Why it matters

The plan includes shared standards, exchanging expertise and best practice, joint verification, collaborative research and training. It also introduces a voluntary Global Media Cooperation Framework that participating organisations can help develop and update. That is a useful starting point, not a finished rulebook. The Gulf Times reports QNA’s participation and describes the initiative’s aims; the practical standards have not yet been set out in the account. Newsrooms could use the framework to compare approaches, but the real test will be what it asks them to do when AI is used in reporting and production.

Discuss: Should international standards for newsroom AI be voluntary and shaped by participating media organisations, or should they set firmer requirements for how AI-generated material is checked and disclosed?
