AI chatbots can help explain budgeting and debt repayment, but financial experts quoted by HuffPost warn against sharing details that identify you or give access to your accounts.
Why it mattersThat means no bank or card numbers, passwords, PINs or government ID numbers. Full bank statements, tax returns and loan documents can bundle several identifying details together. General or anonymised figures are a safer way to ask about finances. Already shared something sensitive? Nava Knafo, head of risk at National Bank Financial, advises deleting the conversation and checking the chatbot’s privacy settings. Treat the information as exposed: secure your accounts, change passwords, enable multi-factor authentication and contact your bank or card issuer. Deletion may not erase stored data immediately, and sharing something does not mean it has been misused.
Discuss: Would you share anonymised figures with a chatbot for budgeting help, or keep financial questions away from AI altogether?
