JR East is using a remotely controlled robot to cut branches along Japan’s Koumi Line, taking some risky work away from crews operating at height near railway tracks.
Why it mattersFox News reports that the ZIZAI ZX-3 uses one arm to grip branches and another to operate a chainsaw. A human operator still directs its movements from a safer location, so this is a practical robotics deployment, not an autonomous chainsaw roaming the rails.
Discuss: For hazardous maintenance, should operators keep robots under direct human control, or is there a case for allowing more autonomy?
