AI token packages are being sold to Chinese consumers as prepaid credits and subscriptions, with Singles’ Day promotions bringing big reported sales. The catch for buyers: equal token quotas do not necessarily buy equal amounts of computing.
Why it mattersCGTN reports that Tmall saw token-category transaction value rise 450% on the first day of its promotion, while JD.com reported a 20-fold rise in sales of large-model token packages during a livestream. Tokens are the units models use to process information, but different models can split the same Chinese text into different numbers of tokens. So a matching quota is not a reliable like-for-like measure of what a package can do. AI subscriptions are reaching the shopping basket; the price labels still need a common ruler.
Discuss: Would you compare AI services by token quota, by tasks completed, or by the price of a specific job?
