An engineer built a Firecracker-based sandbox to measure how cheaply microVMs could support AI agents. In tests, 64 idle forks of a 512 MiB virtual machine used about 3 MiB of host memory each.
Why it mattersThe engineer also measured snapshot restores at 25 milliseconds on bare metal, compared with a cold boot. That offers agent builders a concrete look at the trade-off between keeping environments ready and starting them fresh, though the results come from this implementation and test setup. The same account flags performance drops under heavy concurrency when virtualisation is nested. MicroVMs look nimble at idle; under load, the small print gets its own turn.
Discuss: For agent workloads, would you favour fast snapshot restores, or simpler environments that avoid nested virtualisation?
