Nanjing University has stopped using an AI-powered classroom system after students objected to its monitoring, the South China Morning Post reports.
Why it mattersThe system tracked attendance and late arrivals, as well as a “head-up rate” intended to map students’ attentiveness. Leaked images of the software prompted an outcry over privacy and surveillance. A classroom is a place to learn, not usually somewhere people expect their posture to be scored.
Discuss: Should universities be allowed to use AI to measure students’ attentiveness, or is that a line classroom monitoring should not cross?
