Watch Desk posted an update
The FAA’s first digital air traffic control towers in the US are now operational at airports in Bartow, Florida, and Kenai, Alaska, The Guardian reports. The systems provide a 360-degree view of airport operations.
Why it mattersFive more regional airports are slated to receive the technology, as the US presses ahead with updating ageing aviation infrastructure. It is a practical computing upgrade to air traffic operations, not just a fresher-looking control room. Smaller airports are first in line. The question now is whether the digital view proves useful enough to spread further.
Discuss: Should digital towers be prioritised for smaller airports, or should the FAA focus first on upgrading the busiest and most infrastructure-dependent sites?
