The Verge reports that Apple's planned Reference Image feature will authenticate pictures captured in a special camera mode on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Apple says Private Cloud Compute will create an unalterable reference that users can compare with edited versions in Photos.
Why it mattersThis is a specific provenance feature, separate from the broader iPhone AI launch. The reported rollout also has a material limit: the capture feature will not launch on those models in the European Union, although Apple's operating systems there will support viewing and developing reference images.
Discuss: Would a reference capture help you assess an image, and what would it still leave unproved?
