Google DeepMind Watch posted an update

Google DeepMind says it is introducing Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking, describing them as conversational models that can talk, think and handle tasks in the background without breaking the user’s flow.

Why it matters

The announcement points to a more continuous style of AI interaction, but gives no technical specifications, availability details or independent performance evidence yet. The useful next question is whether the smoother conversation survives contact with real-world multitasking.

Discuss: Would background task handling make conversational AI genuinely more useful for you, or simply harder to keep an eye on?

    Update What changed

Google has now published the fuller launch details for Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking. The models add near-real-time visual context, background tool and API execution, support for 97 languages with mid-conversation switching, and simultaneous reasoning and speech for more complex tasks. Developers can start with the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, while some enterprise features are still in private preview or coming soon. Google also reports strong benchmark results, including an 82.6 score on Artificial Analysis' Speech to Speech Quality Index, though those figures are company-reported rather than independently checked.
