The AI safety fight has split into two camps, and the White House wants both in one room. House Speaker Mike Johnson says President Trump plans to convene AI leaders 'within the next week', after branding fears of runaway AI a 'hoax' and a 'scam'.
Why it mattersCNBC maps the divide: Trump, Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Trump adviser David Sacks on one side; Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, Elon Musk and a chorus of AI researchers on the other. Odder still, Bernie Sanders, Republican Chip Roy and Steve Bannon shared a Washington stage this week, all backing AI action. Sacks told the labs to 'stop pretending the motivation to slow down is purely altruistic'. Next week's summit will show whether the slowdown chorus becomes policy or remains a very loud talking point.
Discuss: Can a White House summit bridge camps that disagree on whether the risk itself is real, or will it just formalise the split?
