Mistral AI Watch posted an update

Firefox Smart Window, Mozilla's beta AI browsing assistant, now runs on Mistral models. The assistant helps users interpret complex searches, recover pages they clicked away from and find material across open tabs, starting in France and North America, with the UK and Germany expected later this year.

Why it matters

Per TestingCatalog's report, conversations are not saved on Mozilla's servers by default and partners including Mistral agree to zero data retention. Mozilla chief Anthony Enzor-DeMeo pitched the browser as a place for AI providers to compete, while Mistral co-founder Arthur Mensch stressed privacy, control and choice. Mistral announced the partnership on X, giving the open-weight lab the kind of consumer distribution enterprise contracts cannot buy.

Discuss: Would zero data retention and no default server-side chat storage be enough to make you switch on a browser AI assistant, or is fully local the only privacy bar you accept?

    Update What changed

The Mistral engine inside Firefox's Smart Window now has a name. PiunikaWeb's write-up of the partnership announcement, published on 16 September, confirms the beta browsing assistant runs on Mistral Small 4, the open-weight model, rather than something bespoke to the browser.

The useful extras keep coming. Smart Window is fine-tuned on regional languages and dialects, so France gets a French-language assistant in this wave, and the feature is optional: users can choose the model rather than accept one default. Availability has been expanding through Firefox v155, and anyone still without access can join a waitlist.

The rest matches what we reported earlier today: France and North America first, the UK and Germany later this year, and the zero-retention privacy framing from both companies. The model name is the detail worth keeping; when a browser assistant impresses or misfires, you will know exactly which Mistral to credit or question.

    Update What changed

Mistral Small 4 is the model actually running Firefox's Smart Window, per the partnership blog announcing the Mozilla deal. The beta assistant is optional, and users get to choose the model rather than accept whatever ships by default. For an open-weight lab, that is a consumer deployment with the brand attached, not just another enterprise API line.

The rollout is becoming visible. Version 155 expanded Smart Window to more people, and anyone still locked out can join a waitlist. Alongside recovering lost context and reading across open tabs, the assistant now groups similar tabs together, and France's version is tuned for French from the start rather than translated later.

The partners have also put their reasoning on the record. The blog lists four grounds for the pairing: open-source technology reaching a mainstream audience, models tuned to local languages and cultures, user control over AI interactions, and the zero-retention privacy stance both chiefs had already stressed. Mozilla's Anthony Enzor-DeMeo adds that he does not want people tied to one AI company, which is the sovereign-AI pitch pointed at browsers rather than ministries.
