Americans are using AI more and trusting it less. Gallup's survey with the Special Competitive Studies Project found regular use climbed from 39% to 51% over the year, while trust in AI to make fair decisions slipped from 32% to 28%. Among rare or non-users, it fell to a stark 12%.
Why it mattersExpectations flipped as well: a year ago 53% thought AI would boost growth against 24% expecting harm; now it is 45% harm, 36% boost, and 70% expect more jobs destroyed than created. The regulation numbers are the eye-catcher: 79% back safety and data-security rules even if they impede AI, and 75% want independent experts rather than the companies running safety tests. In the industry's raging speed-versus-safety debate, the public has already picked a lane.
Discuss: If 79% of Americans want safety and data-security rules even at the cost of slowing AI, what is actually stopping lawmakers from delivering them?
