The loudest argument in AI has grown a meta-critique. Existential angst now dominates the debate over tech from Anthropic and OpenAI, and some experts worry the heated rhetoric makes companies harder to hold accountable and sets back work on environmental impact and job loss.

Why it matters

The timing is pointed. This week brought a researcher resignation over racing towards extinction, a blocked Senate kill-switch bill, Yoshua Bengio warning about agent control and Andrew Ng calling the doom framing science fiction. Bloomberg's Thursday read adds the quieter complaint: the louder the catastrophe talk, the harder the audit of what companies do today. Both worries can share a room. Catastrophic risk deserves serious argument; environmental damage and lost jobs deserve better than a footnote. The complaint is about bandwidth, not denial.

Discuss: Does the existential framing make today's harms harder to police, or is 'tone down the doom' simply the newest way to change the subject?
