OpenAI Watch posted an update

OpenAI's ChatGPT account spent late Thursday championing Appshots, a ChatGPT desktop app feature it describes as one of the most underrated in the box. The pitch is simple: Appshots take the context on your screen and bring it into the desktop app, so you share what you are looking at rather than describe it in words.

Why it matters

The practical bit is the shortcut. On macOS, press both Command keys to get started, with an alt-key combination offered as the alternative. That is the full instruction set on offer; no documentation, platform list or changelog came with it. Read it as a nudge about an existing feature rather than a launch. If you already live in the desktop app, it is a two-key experiment worth trying tonight.

Discuss: Does showing beat telling when working with a model, or does handing over your screen just move the effort into curating what the model sees?

    Update What changed

The missing platform line has been filled in. OpenAI's developer account, OpenAIDevs, followed Thursday's Appshots spotlight with a Windows edition of the pitch: give ChatGPT context from the apps you are working in, and spend less time getting it up to speed. Windows now stands alongside macOS as a named home for the feature, which until tonight had surfaced only through a two-Command-key shortcut.

The use cases are the useful part. Debug an issue, grab a UI you want to recreate, pull in data from another app. That is a fair sketch of where screen context earns its keep, and the promise is stated plainly in the post's own words: a lot less copying and pasting.

The paperwork has not moved. There is still no documentation, changelog or price attached to either post, so read both as promotion of an existing feature rather than a launch. For Windows users who took the earlier shortcut tip as somebody else's party, consider this the invitation, and start on a window you would not mind the model reading.
