A Silicon Valley congressman wants China's AI labs inside the braking arrangement. Ro Khanna has sent letters to Chinese AI companies including Alibaba, DeepSeek and Moonshot, asking each to commit to a binding international agreement to pace frontier AI development, The Information reports.
Why it mattersDario Amodei proposed pacing the frontier this month, Washington has argued all week about whether to slow anything, and Huawei's chair has urged Chinese labs to accelerate. Khanna extends that argument to the labs said to be closing the gap cheaply. The geometry is the snag. Pacing appeals most to whoever is in front, and these letters ask the chasers to accept a ceiling set by the leaders. Would DeepSeek or Moonshot ever sign one, or does pacing become diplomacy only when it binds the leader too?
Discuss: Khanna is asking the labs doing the chasing to accept a pace ceiling set by the leaders. Would DeepSeek or Moonshot ever sign such an agreement, or does pacing only become diplomacy when it binds whoever is ahead too?
