SoftBank has secured an extra $450m on an existing credit line, taking the facility to $6.5bn, people familiar with the matter have told Bloomberg. The stated purpose is financial flexibility as the group keeps expanding its investments in artificial intelligence.

Why it matters

The morning supplies the pattern. Hours earlier, the same publication detailed a $5bn lift in SoftBank's Arm-backed margin loan, taking it to $25bn, its third rise since 2023, alongside a reported $60bn commitment to OpenAI and data-centre plans priced in the billions. The borrowing keeps climbing well ahead of the returns. The small print, presumably, is still being typed up: no rate, maturity or lenders are named, and the sourcing is unnamed. Generous lenders, towering ambitions and debts that mount by the day. The test is whether the revenue arrives before the repayments do.

Discuss: When lenders keep increasing borrowing room for AI bets that have not yet paid for themselves, is that conviction financing or a slow-motion squeeze?
