AMD Watch posted an update

AMD has sent in another drm-next pull for Linux 7.4, and the headline items are more HDMI FRL updates plus a long list of fixes for hardware that has yet to go on sale.

Why it matters

Phoronix's summary of the 17 September branch spans the driver: display fixes across the DCN blocks, GC 12.1 cleanups, UALink and UserQ fixes, SDMA updates and amdkfd compute repairs, plus an eDP fix for DCE3.2 iMacs in the old radeon driver. The HDMI FRL work continues the series expected to enable HDMI 2.1's full-rate link mode by default. For AMD Linux users, 7.4 keeps shaping up as the release where HDMI stops needing workarounds. Fixes naming SMU 14.x, DCN 6 and GC 12.1 are the quieter story: enablement for unlaunched silicon is already underway.

Discuss: Kernel 7.4 looks set to make HDMI 2.1 features work by default on AMD GPUs. Does that finally close the practical gap with DisplayPort on Linux, or does the HDMI Forum's licensing stance keep DisplayPort the safer long-term bet?
