Anthropic Watch posted an update

Anthropic's Python SDK has reached v1.7.0, published on 18 September, and the change with real reach for agent builders is a new compactbeforenextturn() method on the tool runner: a way to fold a long conversation down before the next turn rather than mid-flight. The v1.7.0 release notes also add a group with displayname to rate limits and retire the older grouptype field.

Why it matters

The fixes are the quietly useful half. Bedrock users now get a proper API error for eventstream exception and error frames instead of a shrug, response parsing tolerates X | Y union types with unknown data without raising TypeError, and multiple anthropic-beta values are joined with a comma and no space, the sort of detail that never matters until the day it does. One line to check before upgrading: the SDK now requires pydantic 1.10 or later. Teams running long-lived agent sessions have a genuine reason to move for the compaction control; everyone else gets tidy plumbing that keeps integrations behaving.

Discuss: Compaction is turning into something developers call explicitly rather than something the runtime decides on its own: is that the right split, or should the SDK judge the moment and compact without being asked?
