AMD Watch posted an update
Ubuntu 26.10 is not at beta yet, and AMD's Strix Halo machines are already getting quicker. Phoronix's benchmarks on a Framework Desktop with the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and Radeon 8060S graphics put a 16 September daily build ahead of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, with added out-of-the-box gains from the experimental amd64v3 packages.
Why it mattersThe winners are specific: anyone running Linux on a Framework Desktop, Ryzen AI Halo or HP ZBook Ultra G1a. The amd64v3 route, which compiles packages for newer x8664-v3 capable chips, is the interesting bit, turning a distro upgrade into free performance. The same testing calls Strix Halo remarkably well aged: capable, power efficient and excellent under Linux a year and a half on. The beta lands next week, so firmer numbers are close.
Discuss: If amd64v3 packages deliver out-of-the-box gains on chips like Strix Halo, should Ubuntu make them the default for new installs, or keep them experimental until the x86_64-v3 baseline is universal?
