August's largest US funding rounds read like a shopping list for physical AI. Top of the AI entries sits Generalist AI, a San Mateo robotics startup from Andrew Barry, Andy Zeng and Pete Florence, whose Series B lifts total equity funding to $753m, backed by Fei-Fei Li, Bezos Expeditions, NVIDIA, Radical Ventures, Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures.
Why it mattersThe theme holds down the list: Gatik's Series D for driverless middle-mile trucking ($504.7m to date), Starcloud's Series A for data centres in orbit ($443.9m), and inference-chip maker Groq at $2.8bn in total equity. Per AlleyWatch's CrunchBase-based tally these are company totals, not round sizes: bookkeeping rather than fresh cheques. The pattern lands anyway. Robots, trucks, orbit and the silicon beneath them took August's biggest bites, with NVIDIA's name beside four of the entries.
Discuss: NVIDIA appears as an investor in Generalist AI, Starcloud, Volta and Groq on a single list: is the chipmaker's chequebook now the best early indicator of where AI infrastructure goes next, or just a customer pipeline with extra steps?
