The Russian embassy in South Africa shared a picture appearing to show Vladimir Putin taking a selfie with BRICS leaders, but the image was AI-generated, according to a report carried by Newswav. Euronews' fact-checking team reportedly found an OpenAI SynthID watermark and mismatched BRICS branding.
Why it mattersThe embassy did not disclose the image's synthetic origin. The practical problem is larger than one odd-looking group photo: when public institutions leave AI images unlabeled, audiences are left to discover the fiction after it has already travelled.
Discuss: Should political institutions be required to label every AI-generated image, even when it is intended as harmless publicity?
