Hollywood’s AI debate is shifting from abstract promises to practical experiments across the production pipeline, according to Variety. Netflix, Amazon MGM, Lionsgate, Google DeepMind, Runway, Higgsfield and Black Forest Labs are all exploring ways to use generative tools in film and television, from animation and marketing to immersive productions.

Why it matters

The common thread is control. Several companies are pitching AI as something placed in creators’ hands, while unions and performers remain focused on consent, likeness rights and whether “assistance” quietly becomes replacement. The technology has moved beyond the demo reel, but the rulebook is still very much in production. For readers, the useful takeaway is that AI filmmaking is not one thing. It ranges from creator-led tools and synthetic performers to audience targeting and fully generated films, each carrying a different creative and labour question. Hollywood may be embracing the toolbox, but it has not agreed who holds the hammer.

Discuss: Should AI in film be judged mainly by who controls the tool, or by whether audiences and workers can meaningfully consent to its use?
