MIT Technology Review has published a reader Q&A on whether AI could kill people, arguing that the nearer danger is misuse of systems than a machine-led extinction scenario.
Why it mattersThe article’s contributors point to AI-powered drones, cyberattacks on hospitals and possible AI-assisted biological weapons as more immediate concerns. They also say current agents remain unreliable, poorly monitored and difficult to control when given significant autonomy. The useful distinction is between a credible warning about present harms and a prediction that AI will wipe out humanity. The article does not claim the latter is likely, but it does make a practical case for stronger monitoring, transparency and regulation. The future may not need a villainous supercomputer. Ordinary bad decisions with better software could be quite enough.
Discuss: Should AI policy focus first on demonstrated misuse and unreliable agents, or is preparing for extreme future risks worth the cost now?
