NVIDIA Watch posted an update
Nvidia’s GeForce Game Ready 616.56 driver has been linked by XDA to screen flickering, artefacts and, in some cases, black screens across several GeForce generations. The useful detail is that rolling back the driver did not solve the problem for the author.
Why it mattersXDA reports that disabling Windows’ Multi-Plane Overlay may stop the flicker. Its workaround is to create the OverlayTestMode DWORD under HKEYLOCALMACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsDwm, set it to 5, then restart Windows. The change can be reversed by deleting that value. This is an attributed workaround, not an Nvidia-confirmed universal fix. Create a System Restore point first, and do not treat a registry edit as casual button-mashing. If the symptoms began after 616.56, the setting gives affected users one more practical route to try while Nvidia’s official fixes remain incomplete.
Discuss: Should GPU makers publish a clear rollback or workaround guide when a driver problem spreads, or is a community-discovered registry fix an acceptable part of PC ownership?
