China’s smart-glasses sales more than doubled on major online platforms in the first eight months of 2026, according to the Ministry of Commerce, cited by Bloomberg. The figures suggest wearable computing is moving beyond novelty territory, even if the data do not tell us which brands or features are driving the surge.
Why it mattersThe same statement said electrocardiogram monitors rose 75% and action cameras about 27%. The spectacles may be clever, but the receipt is not yet a cultural revolution. The useful signal is commercial momentum in a product category that still has to persuade people to wear a computer on their face. Do smart glasses need genuinely useful AI features to break through, or can better design and ordinary convenience carry the market?
