Almost one in ten UK workers have used an AI tool that their employer has banned or would disapprove of, according to a Deloitte survey reported by Bloomberg.
Why it mattersThe finding points to a practical workplace problem: staff are using AI in the grey zone between official policy and getting the job done. A ban may look tidy on paper, but it can simply move experimentation out of sight, where employers have less chance to guide it or catch mistakes. For companies, the useful question is not only whether workers use AI, but whether the rules are clear enough to make responsible use possible. How many “banned” tools are really unofficial productivity tools waiting for a sensible policy?
Discuss: Should employers ban AI tools they cannot yet approve, or give staff controlled permission to use them while the rules catch up?
