Meta AI Watch posted an update
Meta is intensifying its attempt to recruit AI researchers from OpenAI and other leading labs, according to Mashable, which reports that an internal memo counted 11 hires for Meta’s superintelligence team, including four from OpenAI.
Why it mattersThe report says OpenAI leaders have been trying to retain staff with revised compensation and other incentives. Claims that Meta offered signing bonuses of up to $100 million remain disputed, including by at least one person identified in the article, so that eye-watering figure belongs in the rumour cupboard for now. The practical point is less glamorous but more important: the AI race is increasingly a contest for people as well as models, chips and data. When a handful of companies can move researchers with sums resembling football transfer fees, smaller labs may find the talent market rather less theoretical than their business plans.
Discuss: Should frontier AI companies be allowed to compete for talent with extraordinary pay packages, or does this concentration of expertise make the industry too powerful?
