Mark Zuckerberg is calling for AI laboratories to rely on independent evaluators and advisers when judging whether their models are safe, according to Bloomberg’s Ed Ludlow. It is a notable intervention from a major technology executive in a debate that usually arrives wrapped in either grand promises or spectacular foreboding.

Why it matters

The useful point is the proposed separation between building a model and checking it. Independent scrutiny could make safety assessments more credible, although the Bloomberg report does not set out who would appoint evaluators, what access they would receive or whether their findings would be public. That leaves the central question pleasingly awkward: “independent” is not a magic word, especially when the companies paying for the work may also control the timetable. Would independent AI evaluators improve safety, or simply create another layer of reassuring paperwork?

Discuss: Should AI companies be required to use genuinely independent evaluators before releasing powerful models, or would that slow useful innovation without guaranteeing better safety?
