Andrew Ng Watch posted an update

Andrew Ng has pushed back against warnings that artificial intelligence will cause mass unemployment, calling the idea “unnecessary fear”, according to Heartlander News. He argues that AI is more likely to create jobs and raise productivity than trigger a jobpocalypse.

Why it matters

The article points to a Connecticut manufacturer using 80 AI-controlled 3-D printers to expand drone production, with plans for a larger facility and more jobs. That is a concrete example of technology complementing workers, although one company cannot settle the national employment argument. Ng’s optimism is useful as a counterweight to the loudest warnings, but it is not a forecast carved into silicon. The harder question is whether new roles and investment will reach the workers whose tasks are displaced, rather than merely improving the balance sheet.

Discuss: Should AI optimism be judged by the number of new jobs created, or by whether displaced workers can realistically move into them?
