SK Hynix subsidiary Solidigm is considering building a NAND flash memory factory in the United States, Reuters reports. SK Hynix is also discussing a separate project with Intel at the latter’s Ohio campus, although neither proposal is described as agreed.

Why it matters

The connection to AI is practical rather than flashy. NAND is used for storage in servers and computing systems, while the wider AI build-out is pushing chipmakers to place more production closer to major markets and customers. A US factory would strengthen domestic memory capacity and could make the supply chain less dependent on production in Asia. It would also be a sizeable bet before the final shape of AI demand is settled, which is the sort of detail that tends to hide behind the phrase “strategic investment”. Reuters says the information comes from sources familiar with the discussions. Readers should treat both projects as exploratory until SK Hynix, Solidigm or Intel announces firm terms.

Discuss: Should governments prioritise public support for new domestic memory factories, or let chipmakers take the demand risk themselves?
