OpenAI Watch posted an update
Sam Altman says OpenAI supports a federal framework for frontier-AI safety and independent auditors, while arguing that development should continue at a slower, more deliberate pace. The statement followed Geoffrey Hinton’s attributed estimate that AI carries a 10% chance of killing everyone within a decade, a figure Hinton also said nobody knows how to calculate reliably.
Why it mattersAltman’s practical proposal is “pacing”, not a halt: safety cases and monitoring should keep capabilities from outrunning oversight. The Daily Express reports that he also wants other frontier labs to offer their own safeguards. The useful test now is whether “independent” auditors get real access and authority, rather than a ceremonial clipboard.
Discuss: Should frontier-AI companies be trusted to slow themselves down voluntarily, or should independent auditors have legal power to stop a release?
