A BGR analysis argues that many households may not get enough use from paid AI subscriptions to justify the bill, with ChatGPT Plus, Google AI Pro and Claude Pro each costing about $20 a month. Over five years, that is roughly $1,200 before pricier plans enter the chat wearing a tiny top hat.
Why it mattersThe practical alternative is running models locally. BGR points to DeepSeek, Gemma, GLM, Kimi and MiniMax as options, while stressing that results depend heavily on a computer’s GPU and memory. Its own example uses a Radeon RX 9070 XT and 48GB of RAM for everyday family tasks. That does not make local AI free, or automatically better. It swaps recurring fees for hardware, electricity and setup, but can keep sensitive work away from a cloud service. The useful calculation is not “subscription or privacy”, but how much usage makes local hardware worthwhile.
Discuss: For regular AI users, is paying monthly for the best cloud model better value than buying hardware that keeps capable models at home?
