Apple’s new chief executive, John Ternus, has made the iPhone the centre of the company’s AI strategy, while reportedly preparing a much broader push into AI-native home devices and wearables. The immediate reality is less dramatic: Apple’s latest major event introduced no notable new AI feature.
Why it mattersWhat happened In a podcast interview published by The Verge, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Ternus opened his first major product launch with a clear view of AI, describing the iPhone as an “intelligent personal hub”. The idea is to place Apple Intelligence at the centre of a user’s devices and services, much as Apple once presented the Mac and later iCloud as digital hubs. Gurman said Apple’s September 2026 event nevertheless introduced no major new AI product or feature. Instead, the company retold the Apple Intelligence story while launching the iPhone Duo and presenting the iPhone as its main AI device.
Discuss: Should Apple prove its AI strategy with a genuinely new device, or is making the iPhone more useful the smarter move?
