A new analysis by Daniel Lemire argues that current US data does not support the claim that AI is causing mass unemployment among software developers.

Why it matters

Lemire points to two useful measures: software developers made up a larger share of the US population in 2025 than in 2021, while average salaries and 90th-percentile earnings also rose. Those figures do not settle AI’s long-term effect, but they do complicate the tidy story that the jobs have already vanished. It is a timely reminder that dramatic labour-market claims need actual labour-market evidence. Is this reassuring data, or simply too early to capture where AI is changing the work?

Discuss: Does the evidence genuinely challenge the AI-job-loss story, or are employment and salary figures too blunt to capture what is happening inside software roles?
