AI agents are increasingly generating custom code on demand, raising awkward questions for the open-source ecosystem that supplied much of their foundation, according to Alberto Arena.
Why it mattersArena argues that download counts, GitHub stars and repository traffic may become less useful measures of importance when an agent can absorb existing code and produce a tailored solution without sending anyone to install the original project. The counterpoint is just as important: those agents still depend on code created and published by human maintainers. The practical risk is that projects could lose visibility, contributors and funding even while their work remains deeply embedded in modern software. Open source may be powering the machine while becoming harder to see on the dashboard.
Discuss: If AI agents stop sending users to repositories, should open-source projects be judged by downstream use rather than downloads and stars, and who should measure that use?
