AI adoption is widespread but still shallow, according to research summarised by a Chicago Tribune editorial published on 21 September. About 45% of workers surveyed said they use AI for their jobs, but usually for only a small share of their tasks, with estimated time savings of roughly 5% where it is used.
Why it mattersThe same account says most businesses report experimental or limited use, while nearly half of respondents expect no noticeable staffing effect from AI over the next year. Examples of practical gains include law firms saving a few hours per attorney each week on research and drafting, and a restaurant operator using automated order-taking instead of adding a drive-through role.
Discuss: Should employers invest now for a transformation that may take years, or wait until AI delivers measurable gains beyond modest task-level time savings?
