Valve has released a beta version of Pyrowave, a Vulkan-based video codec for Steam Remote Play that aims to reduce streaming latency on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Why it mattersPhoronix reports that the codec supports HDR and YUV 4:4:4, but it is intended for local networks with at least gigabit Ethernet and uses considerably more bandwidth than standard codecs. You can enable it in Steam Remote Play’s advanced client settings. This is a useful experiment for people chasing sharper, snappier game streaming, though anyone on ordinary home Wi-Fi may find the bandwidth bill arrives before the magic does. Would you trade substantially higher network usage for lower streaming latency on a local network?
