UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham says Britain will use its upcoming G20 presidency to broker an international agreement on AI governance, ahead of the UN General Assembly.
Why it mattersPolitico reports that Burnham believes the UK is “uniquely positioned” to push cooperation after warnings about the risks of increasingly capable AI systems. The proposal is a diplomatic ambition, not yet a treaty, timetable or agreed set of safeguards. That makes the next question rather less glamorous than the summit photograph: what would Britain actually ask countries to sign? A broad promise to co-operate is welcome, but the useful test will be whether it produces concrete rules for testing, deployment and accountability.
Discuss: Should Britain prioritise brokering a broad international AI agreement, or commit first to a specific safety measure even if fewer countries sign up?
