Donald Trump has proposed rebranding artificial intelligence as “super intelligence”, according to a BBC report published on 22 September. He has previously argued that whoever wins AI wins, and the report says he remains firmly opposed to regulation.
Why it mattersThe name change is symbolism rather than policy, but it neatly captures the administration’s preference for acceleration over restraint. Renaming the technology will not make it cleverer, safer or easier to govern, though it may give an old argument a shinier hat. The practical question remains what rules, if any, accompany the rhetoric.
Discuss: Should governments spend political capital renaming AI, or is forceful language about safety and regulation more important than the label?
