Barrick Gold’s North American unit has agreed a five-year partnership with Avathon, whose AI software predicts industrial equipment failures and monitors mine and factory safety risks, The Information reports.

Why it matters

The deal arrives as Barrick prepares to float a minority stake in the unit, which produces most of its gold, with the company targeting a year-end listing. AI credentials are apparently now part of the pre-IPO outfit, alongside the usual financial tailoring. The report does not disclose the contract’s value or describe the system’s performance. The useful question is whether this is operational technology with measurable safety and maintenance benefits, or mainly a glossy line in the IPO story. Should industrial AI deals be judged first by results in the field or by the investor confidence they create?
