DeepSeek and Moonshot AI are expected to join OpenAI and Anthropic at a UN Security Council session on artificial intelligence and international security in New York on 23 September, according to Seoul Economic Daily, citing Reuters. The meeting puts Chinese and US AI companies in the same room as governments debate a technology increasingly treated as a security issue, not merely a faster way to draft emails.

Why it matters

The report says OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue are also due to attend. It remains unclear whether DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng or Moonshot founder Yang Zhilin will appear in person, and the account does not establish that the session will produce an agreement.

Discuss: Should international AI talks prioritise a narrow system for reporting serious incidents, even without agreement on wider rules, or would that legitimise an unchecked race?
