Kernel.org is publishing nightly shallow, single-branch tarballs of mainline and stable Linux branches to reduce the server load caused by frequent shallow Git clones, according to Monsieur Icon.
Why it mattersFor CI teams, that offers a lighter alternative to repeatedly cloning repositories. A supplied helper script can automate verification, cleanup and checkout, but users still need to check commit hashes before trusting a downloaded archive. It is quiet infrastructure work, which is usually how the useful stuff arrives: without a launch video, a mascot or a fog machine. The practical question is whether more projects should offer verified snapshots for demanding automation workloads.
Discuss: Should major open-source projects provide verified CI snapshots by default, or does that risk creating another distribution path to maintain?
