AI researcher Toby Walsh has outlined five possible routes to catastrophe, from misuse of advanced systems in biological or nuclear contexts to social breakdown caused by job losses, misinformation and synthetic companionship. His analysis appears in The Conversation and is prompted by recent warnings from former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon and Anthropic researcher Evan Hubinger.
Why it mattersWalsh also stresses that current AI systems are not superintelligent, and that many dramatic scenarios face real-world friction. His piece is an argument about plausible risks, not evidence that any of them is imminent or that today’s models can carry them out. The useful takeaway is less “the machines are coming” than “which safeguards address which risk?” A grand forecast is easy to share. Matching a specific danger to a testable intervention is where the paperwork, regrettably, begins.
Discuss: Should AI safety policy focus first on concrete misuse such as cyber, biological and nuclear risks, or on longer-term loss-of-control scenarios?
