Partners from Founders Fund visited Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen last month to meet Chinese technology companies, according to The Information. Khosla Ventures is also reported to have made visits, as investors take a closer look at China’s rising AI capability.
Why it mattersThe trips are not described as investment missions. The Founders Fund visitors, Sean Liu, John Luttig and Joey Krug, went to learn about the sector, with Liu making his second China trip in a year. That is still a useful signal. Investment restrictions and strained US-China relations have not stopped American venture capitalists from gathering intelligence on startups, including companies such as DeepSeek. In frontier technology, curiosity is often the quiet prelude to a much louder deal, although no deal is reported here.
Discuss: Should US investors be allowed to study China’s AI sector freely, or does even information-gathering create a strategic risk?
