UK life-sciences startup Basecamp Research has raised $140m in a Series C led by S32, with Anthropic among the participants, according to Tech.eu.
Why it mattersThe company says it will use the funding to train a new generation of AI models. The round takes Basecamp’s total funding to $225m, putting a substantial price tag on the effort to apply AI to biological research. The useful question now is not whether the cheque is large. It is whether these models can produce results that move beyond impressive demos and into reproducible scientific work. Biology remains stubbornly unimpressed by venture-capital enthusiasm.
Discuss: Should AI investors prioritise life-sciences models that can show reproducible discoveries, even if that produces fewer flashy launches?
