A new AP explainer lays out three serious ways AI could amplify catastrophic harm: helping trigger nuclear conflict, enabling bioweapons research, or powering large-scale cyberattacks. Its most useful point is also the least cinematic: the danger often comes from people using AI, not machines spontaneously deciding to conquer the planet.

Why it matters

The report says RAND found current nuclear command safeguards make AI-caused nuclear use unlikely, though that could change if models enter the decision chain or gain unauthorised access. It also cites Anthropic’s claim that its systems blocked requests linked to more harmful biological research, while noting that experts dispute how plausible the worst-case scenarios are.

Discuss: Which AI risk deserves the most attention now: autonomous systems, or people using powerful tools against one another?
