Korean laser-processing equipment maker HK says it has secured further sales opportunities in Taiwan, including a planned supply deal with a first-tier supplier to TSMC’s semiconductor-equipment chain.
Why it mattersThe company says that supplier was one of two selected in a TSMC tender for new-plant equipment, and plans to replace European laser-cutting machines with HK products. HK says the equipment could be supplied by the end of this year, although the report describes an opportunity and planned replacement, not a completed order. The signal is modest but useful: Taiwan’s semiconductor expansion is creating business for the industrial machinery behind the fabs, not only for chip designers and wafer manufacturers. HK’s claims come from its own exhibition announcement, so the final contract, value and direct TSMC involvement remain unconfirmed. The glamorous bit is the chip. The invoice often belongs to whoever cuts the metal around it.
Discuss: Should semiconductor supply-chain companies be judged by direct contracts with chipmakers, or can a credible position several tiers down be just as valuable?
